A Whiskey in the Jar (whiskey a palackban, kancsóban, üvegben s.t.b.) egyike a legnépszerűbb tradicionális ír kocsmadaloknak. A történet a 17. században Írország déli hegyein játszódik. Egy útonállóról szól, aki kirabolt egy angol katonatisztet (Farrell kapitányt), miközben az a pénzét számolta. Majd felkereste szeretőjét Jennyt, akinek átadta a lopott pénzt. Miután megbízott a lányban az ital hatására boldogságban elszenderedett. Amint álomba merült a lány ellopta kardját és pisztolyába vizet öntött majd értesítette a pénzétől megfosztott Farrell kapitányt.
Reggel már katonák várták a pórul járt és harcképtelen kalandort, akinek az útja egyenesen a börtönbe vezetett. De hogy jön ide a whiskey? A válasz egyszerű: a whiskey az ír dalok nélkülözhetetlen kelléke. Ebben a dalban a refrénben jelenik meg, egyfajta búfelejtőként, azt üzenve: sebaj, igyunk egyet, vagy még egyet, amíg van whiskey az üvegben!

"Whiskey in the Jar" is one of the most popular traditional Irish pub song. The story set of the 17. century in the Southern mountains of Ireland. The song is about a highwayman who robbed an English military officer (Captain Farrell), while he was counting of his money. Since it is happened, he passed the money to his lover Jenny. Trusting the girl, he fell asleep in happiness as a result of the drink. Than Jenny stole his rapier and poured water into his pistol. Jenny betrayed him by informing the Captain, deprived of his money. Next morning soldiers were waiting for the leaned and incapacitated adventurer and he was taking to the prison.
The question is: how whiskey comes here? The answer is simple: the whiskey is an essential ingredient of the Irish songs. It appears in the chorus of this song as a kind of forgetfulness saying: no matter, drink one or another while you have whiskey in
the Jar!
